A 3D-Printed Continuously Variable Transmission for an Electric Vehicle Prototype

This paper aims to present the design of a new 3D-printed continuously variable transmission (CVT) developed for an electric vehicle prototype competing in Shell Eco-marathon battery category, world-wide energy efficiency competition sponsored by Shell. The proposed system is composed polymeric conic geared friction wheel assembled motor axle and directly coupled rear tire vehicle. conical shape allows implement continuous variation diameter contact with tire. was mounted over board linear bearings, allowing speed ratio change moving laterally. A computational simulation model CVT created Matlab/Simulink environment obtain traction force also analyze performance. results demonstrated possibilities increasing range output available torque wheel. Also, it shown simulated that designed consumes 10.46% less than fixed ratio, demonstrating concept’s potential consumption reduction. Lastly, 3D-printing slicing software optimization algorithm plug-in used determine best printing parameters based on tangential force, maximum displacement safety factor. When compared original part 100% infill density, optimized solution reduced component mass about 12% while maintaining safe mechanical resistance stiffness.
